The Art of Preservation: A 14-Year Blind Tasting with Coravin Founder Greg Lambrecht

The Art of Preservation: A 14-Year Blind Tasting with Coravin Founder Greg Lambrecht

"When you pour wine with the Coravin system, the last glass is always as amazing as the first." — Greg Lambrecht

Wine lovers know that the joy of a great bottle transcends time, but what if you could put that theory to the test over 14 years? That’s exactly what Greg Lambrecht, Founder and inventor of the Coravin by-the-glass system, set out to do.

The birth of Coravin

Over 20 years ago, Lambrecht developed the first prototype of his innovative device, known as the "wine mosquito." His goal was simple yet revolutionary: to enjoy a glass of wine anytime without the need to finish the entire bottle.

Years later, he decided to conduct an ambitious experiment: the longest blind tasting he had ever undertaken, lasting an impressive 14 years. His objective was to answer a critical question:

Can a bottle of wine truly be preserved without compromising its original quality?

A blind wine tasting challenge

For this occasion, Greg carefully stored three bottles of the same vintage, each accessed at different times.

When it was finally time for the tasting, he lined up three glasses: the first contained the control bottle, untouched; the second held wine accessed nine years earlier using the Coravin system; and the third came from the original bottle opened in January 2005 with one of Coravin’s first prototypes.

As Greg started the tasting, he made confident guesses about the identity of each wine:

So, I think this is bottle number three, control. I think this is bottle number one from 14 years ago, and I think that’s bottle number two, which is from nine years ago."

The Moment of Truth

However, the outcome was surprising. He found that his hypothesis was completely wrong, as the wines tasted remarkably similar. The results confirmed what he had long believed: Coravin technology could preserve a wine's integrity over extended periods.

“This means there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy whatever wine you want, whenever you want.”

To this day, Greg’s invention gives wine lovers freedom and flexibility in how they enjoy wine, encouraging a new way to drink that frees them from the constraint of having to finish a bottle before it goes bad.
